Paseando por Granada, me encontré ante este muro que invita a la reflexión y, aún más, en estos días repletos de celebraciones relacionadas con el Día Mundial de la Salud Mental.
Ni una, ni dos, ni tres… sino muchas, muchas veces he oído a personas ingresadas en unidades de salud mental recriminar a los profesionales: “¡Esto es peor que la cárcel!”.
Tanto si eres profesional de la salud, usuario del sistema de sanitario o lector/lectora habitual del blog te invito a observar con detenimiento la imagen (hay más de lo que parece a simple vista) y reflexionar sobre estas palabras.
¿Qué opinas? ¿Te animas a compartir tus pensamientos?
Y después, podrías ser interesante ver la película: Le Bal des Folles (El baile de las locas) obra adaptada (de la novela del mismo nombre de Victoria Mas), dirigida y protagonizada por Mélanie Laurent. El film se desarrolla en Francia, a finales del s. XIX, en un entorno con base histórica, el sanatorio de la Salpêtrière dirigido por Charcot uno de los “padres” de la neurología y psicopatología modernas.
Desde el minuto uno, la película, te sumerge en la atmósfera de la época y la respuesta que en esos momentos se da a la locura. Muestra una cruda realidad, en la que una muy incipiente medicina experimenta métodos terapéuticos y diagnósticos para conocer, nombrar y tratar los trastornos mentales. En este sentido, a pesar de la dureza de algunas de las escenas, posiblemente la directora nos muestra una realidad algo dulcificada que omite métodos mucho más cruentos y bárbaros.
¿Cuánto de lo que podemos ver en la película puede estar, de una u otra manera, aún presente en nuestro sistema sanitario actual? Un material interesante para reflexionar sobre los Derechos Humanos y la Salud Mental… Espero tu respuesta…
Y como muestra un pequeño botón, la enfermera jefa nada más ingresar le dice a la protagonista respecto a la posibilidad de abandonar la Salpêtrière:
– No es tu decisión. No es la decisión de tu padre… Es la decisión del Dr. Charcot.

Dear José, I haven’t watched the film, I noted maybe I can watch on Netflix. The question or the point about the psychiatric hospitals are jail… If we think of the past days of this field of psychiatry, psychology, or neurology,… they were not easy and we can’t say that it wasn’t hard for patients. especially treatment modalities! By the way believe me, I haven’t heard in my country that it was a World mental Day… Even we have a very serious mental problems in the country. If you keep following the daily news you can understand this. Our autocrat also has a mental problem too… For me happy people live in the mental peace countries… maybe we are fine but living in these problems, we can’t be happy so our mental healt gets damage too… There are many parameters in this subject, dear José, I know you want to hear the thoughts about today’s situations, I can be the last one to share my thoughts about this because of my country situations. I do believe we would be a subject, for the books, lessons, experiences, etc. By the way how works our psychiatric I don’t know very well. But I am sure in there, better than us. I totally agree with you that if there are not a minimum of human and economic conditions in society we cannot be happy, nor live in peace nor speak of freedom.

Regarding mental health care in hospitalization units, even today there are many complicated things: involuntary admissions, forced treatment, smoking ban, use of mechanical restraints, restriction of visits and communication with the outside … Facts that can make patients feel like they are in prison.
I see that World Mental Health Day is not as global as it may seem at first. But even so, it is encouraging to see how many professionals, patients and families row together in the direction of humanization and respect for human rights and care based on scientific evidence. Hopefully, again my wish, that all this spreads throughout the planet.
